What are cordyceps spores?

cordyceps sporesThe cordyceps mushroom, often reffered to as the “Olympic mushroom,” has been documented in Chinese medical texts for over a thousand years. One of the earliest references to Cordyceps is found in this classic Chinese Pharmacopeia, which dates back to the Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE). The fungus was traditionally used to treat a variety of ailments, such as fatigue, respiratory issues, and kidney diseases. Cordyceps spores are amazing!

These mushrooms may also help to support energy, endurance, and athletic recovery (with the presence of adenosine and cordycepin – bioactive compounds which may help with ATP synthesis).

An important fungus, among us

A cordyceps spore is a microscopic cell of fungi that can be dispersed through the air to find new hosts. The fungus produces fruiting bodies, and sclerotia, releasing new spores into the environment to continue the cycle. Cordyceps sinensis is found naturally only in high-altitudes, while the Cordyceps militaris mushroom spores are cultivated artificially to increase affordability and accessibility.

Cordyceps gained scientific attention for its unique lifecycle and potential medicinal properties. Researchers began to study its bioactive compounds, such as cordycepin and polysaccharides, which were found to have various health benefits.

Athletic Performance and Recovery

1993 World Championships: The fungus gained international fame when Chinese athletes who had reportedly used Cordyceps supplements broke multiple records at the 1993 World Track and Field Championships. This spurred further interest in its potential to enhance athletic performance.
